Military Working Dogs Foundation Visits Next Week

The Military Working Dogs Foundation will be our featured guests next week, Feb. 9 at our next meeting. They'll tell us how they assist the Department of Defense Military Working Dog Center in finding suitable homes for military working dogs that become available for adoption because they are no longer capable of performing their military duties. The After School Program will join us in the cafeteria.

We're Playing Ball With Bobby Cox

I want to invite everyone to an event at the Boys and Girls Club in Woodstock this Saturday that the Homeless Pets Foundation School Pet Clubs are helping sponsor in order to benefit the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. They have started pet clubs in their county also and our partner, Bobby Cox, former manager of the Atlanta Braves, will be there from 12:00 to 3:00 to sign baseballs. Any teacher sponsor or parent who volunteers an hour of their time at our pet club booth will put their name in for a drawing for a free autographed baseball by Bobby Cox. See the attachment for more information. We're meeting at Town and Country Vet. Clinic close to the Big Chicken at 8:30 or you can come on your own. The address is on the flyer. Let me know if you can make it! It will be lots of fun. We'll be selling t-shirts, Aliyah's atouch of warmth blankets, Braves tickets, and more. Bring your significant others, your children, a friend, or come by yourself. I'd love to represent Sanders and introduce everyone to our wonderful parents and club members, who have made the success of our pilot club possible!

We are so excited that Tomasina and Butterscotch, two Homeless Pets Foundation cats, have been adopted after being in foster care for one year! One of our Sanders teachers adopted them. Roxie, another one of our club's pet features goes to her new forever home next Tuesday. And Taco, our featured chi mix, goes to his new home after the first of the year. Thanks Sanders for all the great work! We have placed six homeless pets so far this year. Please check out the chi puppies we're trying to place for a woman who rescued the pregnant mother just before she had the pups. Oh, and by the way, JJ and Jingles are doing great in their new home! The baby chi's

This mama chi was found wandering around on the side of the road while almost ready to deliver pups. A very kind lady gave her safe haven while she delivered her pups and is keeping them until they find homes. If you are looking for a puppy for a Christmas gift, these little chi mixes are adorable. The mom is available also. There is no adoption fee, just in need of a loving home.

"Milo has been my love for almost 6yrs. He has a lot of energy & loves attention. He likes to play w/his toys, cuddle at your feet & stare out the window (if he has access to it). He's a really good baby. It breaks my heart to send him to another home. But I can no longer care for him. I have recently had a baby & I'm a single mom, so giving him the attention he is used to is really hard. I want him to have a home where he can get a lot of love & attention.

She is spayed, chipped, and vetted. She is
very loyal as you can see from the picture and
wants someone to play with as she has sooo much

Hello Everyone and thank you so much for visiting our pet club blog. We recently started using a magazine layout as an attempt to update the look of our blog. Blogspot, our host, has not made it possible to add gadgets to this new layout yet. The gadgets allow us to invite our followers to leave their email address so they can receive updates, link to other favorite places, and archive our posts, among other things. As soon as they make this option available, we'll invite you to join us again by leaving your email addresses. However, because we would like your feedback about what we're doing, we'd like to invite you to leave a comment. Breakfast with Santa, Adoption Site & Buck's Visit

Ho! Ho! Ho! Breakfast with Santa was awesome. The food, the chorus performance, Reindeer Lane, the vendor booths, Santa's elves, and Sanders Pet Club adoption site all added to make this a jolly way to spend a Saturday morning. We sent home adoption applications on both of our canine features: Roxie, our lab/shepard feature from last month, and Taco, our chihuahua feature for this month. We are hopeful these wonderful animals have found their forever homes! The day would not have been complete without the Southeastern Greyhounds' Reading Paws' team, Ms. Lisa Poole and Buck's visit to our adoption site. They came to tell us about their very successful reading program. Ms. Jenkins, our principal, is excited to learn more about the success this program has in helping readers improve their reading levels. We hope they will be able to visit our school on a regular basis soon! Thanks Ms. Poole and Buck (Buck is a former racing Greyhound and is absolutely gorgeous!). Southeastern Greyhound Adoption will be at Breakfast with Santa this Saturday, December 10. Breakfast will be from 9:00 to 12:00 and Lisa Poole from SEGA and her Greyhound will join us around 10:00 at our mini-adoption site. Ms. Poole is going to tell us about the Reading Paws Program. The program specializes in training Greyhounds to work with readers in the school setting. We are so excited to meet them. Don't miss it! We'll have some animals for adoption also. We'll be located in the hallway away from the eating area.

Cobb County Animal Shelter Supply Drive Great Success!

Thanks to our Sanders family for all the donations you made during our supply drive campaign. We collected collars, leashes, blankets, towels, toys, kennels and more. We will take the items to the shelter on a Saturday (we'll talk about it at our meeting on Thursay). The furry creatures will be jumping for joy when they see all the things we're bring them. Welcome to the Sanders Pet Club! Our pet club is very special! A few years ago we started an afterschool pet club. The mission of the club is for elementary school students to help find homes for homeless pets through networking in the community. Our club has become very popular, and as a result, we have begun our fourth year helping pets find homes, learning how to become responsible pet owners, and participating in fund-raising and service events in our community. It has been very exciting. One of the most rewarding experiences is participating in the opportunities for family involvement our club spawns. Our families are the best! Moms, dads, brothers and sisters, and grandmothers participate in the activities associated with our club. But, they don't just come and stand around as they watch their children further our club's cause, they take an active role in helping accomplish our goals, whether it's helping to wash a car or helping to walk a dog. As a result of working in the community for the last few years, we have come to realize that more than ever, there are many pets in our neighborhoods who need homes: someone moves, someone loses a job, someone dies or a pet strays. So, please join us in helping to spread the word about our pet features. Place the animals' pictures and bios on your facebook page or direct your friends to our blog. Chick-fil-A Car Wash, a Great Success

We had a great time today at our car wash at Chick-fil-A. We were blown away at the turnout of parents and students! Even Ms. Dingle, our past principal, was there with sponge in hand helping us make those cars shine. We made over $200.00 to support our club's mission, helping place homeless animals in our community. Thanks to Karen Stonehart for planning this event, Mr. Julander for supervising all the junior car washers, our teacher sponsors Theda Jenkins and Ms. Demande for their assistance, and to the parents and the students for all of their hard work. You'll are the best!!! We only had 1 and 1/2 weeks to plan for this event because today was the only date Chick-fil-A could give us, yet it was still a success. The parents decided they wanted to do another car wash in the Spring, except this car wash is going to have a theme: Car Wash of the 70's. So, get your Afro wig, your beads and your bellbottoms ready because at our Spring car wash we'll be moving those sponges and towels to the tunes of Rose Royce's Car Wash and other 70's Disco songs! Pet Feature and Orphaned Pets...Please Help Us Find a Home Again

The two terriers and the two cats have lost their very loving mother to a short illness from which she did not recover. Sanders Pet Club is trying to help the dad find new homes for them. He is in the military and has been stationed out of the Atlanta area. Because he travels a lot, he can not take them with him. He leaves in two weeks so we're trying to help them get placed before he goes. I have met all of them and they are so adorable that I wish I could keep them all. The terriers are grieving and are still expecting mom to come home. These terriers have brought life-long love and companionship to this family and deserve to find a home where they can live out the rest of their lives in safety and in comfort. The cats are much younger and have lots of years ahead to prowl around and amuse with their mysterious ways. Please call 678-232-7740 if you have room in your home and in your heart to take one of them in. There is no adoption fee, but an application needs to be completed. They will be at our car wash at Chick-fil-A this Saturday from 10:00 to 2:00. Come get your car washed, eat breakfast, lunch or brunch, visit our little friends and say hello to Cha Cha, the Chick-fil-A cow!

Noel is a Rat Terrier. She's 12 years old,
and so beautiful.

Hershey is a Manchester Terrier. She's 15. Blind in one eye
since birth, but that hasn't kept her from being a most
beloved pet and so very sweet.

Sassy is a Siamese. She's fun-loving and very
affectionate. She's 3 years old and gorgeous.

Forrest Gump is a Calico. She has a short tail
and is3 years old. Beautiful!

We had a great time at the fall festival today. A friend of Ms. Nelums fell in love with Jingles and JJ and asked if she could take them home to meet her family and see if they were all in agreement that this might be the chi's forever home. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

Sanders Pet Club has a lot going on this Saturday at the Fall Festival. Come on out and meet our pet club features. Ms. Jenkins gave us special permission to bring 5 adoptable animals under one condition - she made us promise we would not show them to her because her husband has already said "no", "no", "no", they have plenty four-legged friends already. So you'll have to come to the festival to help keep her away from the kennels because if she sees one of them, she'll want to take one home and we don't want her to get in trouble! We'll also have some of Aliyah's Atouchofwarmtn pet blankets that we made at our pet club celebration at the end of last year. These will be on sale for $15.00 and just in time for the cooler weather.

Our families are the best! Moms, dads, brothers and sisters, and grandmothers participate in the activities associated with our club. But, they don't just come and stand around as they watch their children further our club's cause, they take an active role in helping accomplish our goals. Butterscotch and Tomasina Available for Adoption

Tomasina and Butterscotch are both available for adoption. They were found wondering around in a neighborhood where a Sanders' teacher lives. She took care of them until a Tomcat was seen lurking around the neighborhood. So another one of our animal-loving teachers decided to foster them. They are extremely sweet and gentle. They have been neutered and spayed and have had their shots and a medical check. The only thing they haven't had is a stable home that they can call their own. If you are interested in one or both of them and can give them the love they deserve, please call 678-232-7740 to arrange to meet them.

Sanders Pet Club wants to welcome everyone back to school for the 2011-2012 school year. We are really excited about the guest speakers, the lessons, the fund raisers and especially the homeless pets we will help to place this year through our pet club program. This is our 4th year as a club and each year is met with new challenges, new opportunities and new faces. And every year we become more successful in helping to save the life of a pet in our community. We hope you will join us on this journey as we experience together that "kindness is a good thing." For those of you who did not make it to the very first Clubs' Orientation meeting at Sanders and did not get an opportunity to sign up for our club, we will be sending home more information soon. Harry's Adoption Site Visit on April 30, 2011

Jerald Payne and his family didn't know when they came to Harry's Farmer's Market on Saturdaty to volunteer to walk dogs that they would end up taking Ralphe home with them! They called dad first, and he said it was fine. Ralphe found a great home and the Payne's found a lifelong friend.

Cameron Sims and his family came to Harry's to volunteer to walk dogs after his baseball game. He is walking Corky, our school club feature. It was a beautiful day!

But, we had a great time. The weather was gorgeous. We got to walk lots of dogs, visit the doggie camp, watch some very special pets get beautified in the grooming room and talk to the cats.

She has all sorts of animals in her shop in Austell, not dogs and cats, but things like parrots and other exotic birds, turtles (huge ones), reptiles, ferrets and more. She's going to bring some of her special animals with her to our next pet club meeting and tell us some things about them that we probably don't know! See you then!

Pet Smart Adoption Site Visit

Don't forget this Saturday is our 1st adoption site visit for the year. Get your forms turned in as soon as possible! You can sign up for 1 hour time slots anytime from 12:00 to 4:00. But remember, you must bring a parent with you. Come visit with the dogs and take them on their walks, watch obedience training (if scheduled during your particular time slot), experience the animals being beautified by professionals groomers and visit with the cats. It's a fun time, so don't miss it!

Ms. Cooper is the wunderful, wunchwoom wadies' sister. She owns her very own grooming business and is excited to share her profession with us. Maybe Ms. Wobin will join us too. Welcome 2010-2011 Sanders Pet Club

We are off to a great start this year in our pet club. We had our first meeting September 30 and we had almost 50 students attend. We started off, of course, by having our snack, and then we talked about the mission of our club which is to help save homeless animals by spreading the word by putting up posters in our community with the picture and the story of a homeless dog or a cat we have chosen to feature.

Sara, brought her dog, Dizzy, to share with us. She adopted Dizzy from the Cobb County Animal Shelter. Dizzy had been returned twice to the shelter, but Sara fell in love with him and decided to take a chance on adopting him. After a few weeks with him at home, we realized that Dizzy had a hard time coping with being left alone while we were away. We figured this was the reason he was returned to the shelter twice.

Sara and her friend decided to do some research to see if there was anything they could do to help Dizzy with his separation anxiety. So, we have been using all the information they could find to help him change his behavior and we are having good success. The moral of the story is don't be quick to turn an animal away just because it has a problem. Research to find out you can help him or her. In our case, education and consistency has helped Dizzy tremendously and we are so glad we chose to take a chance on him.

It was a beautiful day at Pet Smart at Cumberland on Saturday. We walked lots of dogs, visited the cats that were up for adoption, watched the dogs play in the Doggie Day Care, saw an obedience class and experienced dogs being clipped and groomed in the salon. Valentine Fundraiser

We had great success with our very first pet club fundraiser. We sold all 130 boxes of Valentine cards and made $135.00. This money will be used in part to give our visiting guest speakers a donation for sharing their time and their information with us. Thanks to all the pet club members and Ms. Oliver, Ms. Jenkins and Ms. Khan for their help!

He will be bringing a dog from the Cobb County Police Department's K-9 unit to demonstrate how they use dogs to help them in their police work. We had a great time at Pet Smart in Smyrna Saturday working with the Homeless Pets Foundation. We walked the dogs, played with them and gave them the very special attention they deserved. We also got a chance to watch the Pet Smart groomers in action as the felines and canines got all beautied up! Some of us got to see the dog trainer working with her charges. The cats were pretty to look at, but they couldn't come out to play. Look at our pictures and see if you will agree with us that this was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. We hope you'll be their next time!

Welcome to a new school year at Sanders. We are really excited about our plans for the Sanders Pet Club this year! We had our first meeting November 12 and it went great. The students chose a pet to sponsor from the six-pack we chose from the Homeless Pets Foundation. They copied and pasted their choice onto their poster template which had already been loaded on their computer. Then, they went to the HPF website, copied and pasted the information about the pet onto their poster, and the last step was to print the poster. It was a great lesson in technology! I hope everybody was busy over the weekend finding places to post their adoptable pets. We talked about our mission which is to be a spokesperson for homeless pets by getting the posters out into our community so people know these adorable pets are available. All our pet club members have to do is just get the word out. Anyone interested in adopting the pet can call the number that is on the bottom of the poster. The volunteers at the HPF will do all the rest. These are some of the other things we will do this year: visit Pet Smart Adoption Site, have guest speakers such as a veterinarian and other people in our community who work with animals, learn about responsible pet care, have a couple of fundraisers, wear our Sanders Pet Club t-shirts and just have a great time. I am very, very shy around new people and have a tendency to hide in new surroundings. But, I am truly very sweet and have quite the personality. My name is Forrest. Forrest Gump! I just spent 12 days in a very tall tree! I was scared, hungry, cold, and wet, but the people in the house below didn't care and thought it was funny that I was up there. It's a good thing that another neighbor saw me, because he got a ladder, climbed right up as high as he could and when he did, I came running down right into his arms! Boy, was I relieved! It's so good to be back with people again! Yes, I just love people! And dogs. And cats. It's because I have a lot to tell everyone and so I'm very talkative! And I love to be held and to hug and to sit close to you. I'm pretty skinny right now, but it won't be long before I look healthy again! The doctor says I'm 8 months old (3/20/09) so I'm just a kid. Animal Shelter where I was about to be euthanized for lack of room. I do have dignity & I am a quite & gentle soul who never tries to impose. I get along with all but I am very laid back & a bit reserved so I just let the others have the attention & I am happy when they even notice me. Hi, I'm JZ and I volunteer with the Homeless Pets Foundation. I couldn't resist taking these Cocker Spaniel triplets home with me to foster until the perfect person comes along to adopt them. But, please hurry because I am getting so attached to them. As a matter of fact, one of them has already been adopted since I took this picture. However, I'm not sure which one because they all look alike to me. Here's the deal, they are female, about 11 weeks old and are up to date on all their shots. They are so playful and just love to sit and look at you. They make me feel really special and I know they will make you feel special too. Sanders Pet Club is excited about beginning a new year in 2009-10. Though we are not considered to be an academic club, many of the things we do have an educational focus, whether it is using technology to make our posters, learning about pet care and about issues involving animals or writing letters of thanks to the Military Dog Handlers. Another important aspect of our club is to build leadership skills in our young members. One way to do this is by electing officers to help organize and manage some of the many things we do. We held our election at our last club meeting and Ms. Corinna Oliver, Counselor, helped us go through the same election process she uses for the Student Council elections. The students had to be upcoming 5th graders and current members to qualify. Congratulations to Colt Simmons, President; Kayla Jones, Vice-President; Dzenis Sipcic, Treasurer; and Tatiana Joseph, Secretary.

Despite the rain, several students decided to brave the elements to volunteer at Pet Smart on Saturday. Pet Smart was kind enough to let us walk to dogs inside. Surprisingly, there were still lots of people visiting the adoptable animals and I believe there were even a few that found forever homes. Thanks parents for bringing your dog lovers out!

I’m Cleo & I am just lucky to be alive. My owners decided to dump me at a dumpster along with other feral cats. A nice lady trapped me and saw that I had been neutered; she also realized I was tamed. I am extremely affectionate & I give little love nibbles. I want so much to be a part of a family again. One more thing about me is that I do have feline AIDS, but I am such a great boy, that shouldn't stop you from calling if you would like a sweet boy to be a part of your home.

UPDATE: March 12, 2009 Ms. Oliver and her husband decided to adopt this blond lab mix!

This blond lab mix was found roaming around Sanders. We fed her and gave her water. There were no tags on the dog. We didn't want to turn it in to an animal shelter, so Corinna Oliver, our Intermediate School Counselor decided to take it home temporarily to give us a chance to find its owner. We posted pictures at the main intersections around the school in hopes that it will be claimed. In the meantime, if anyone would like to adopt this dog, respond to this blog and we'll get back with you. She is very sweet and responds very well to children.

Club members Jonathan Burke, Cassidy Simmons and Colt Simmons visit Town and Country Veterinary clinic. Lori McDowell, Homeless Pets School Clubs' coordinator, took the students on a tour through the different kennel areas. Students saw animals who were recuperating from surgery, animals who were available for adoption, and animals who were being boarded. They enjoyed being able to pet the dogs and to ask questions about them. Dr. Good showed us a couple of the dogs who had been rescued. Our visit is featured on the school news page on February 11. It was a great experience!

Homeless Pets Club Informational Meeting

We held an informational club meeting January 22 to an overwhelming crowd of animal lovers. Over 100 students and four sponsoring teachers and parents listened as Dr. Good, co-founder of the Homeless Pets Foundation, shared not only his passion for working with animals, his appreciation for the contributions pets make in our world, but also his experiences with abandoned and mistreated animals. He praised the students for their desire to learn more about pets and reminded us that if Michael Vick had been exposed to the love of pets at an early age, perhaps he would not be serving prison time for his role in committing crimes against animals. At Sanders, we appreciate the professionals in our community who take the time to visit our school and expose our students to the many possible career choices that exist for them if they are willing to study and work hard.

This is Mittens, our precious rag doll cat that we rescued from a local veterinary clinic after his owner had turned him in. We didn't have him very long as he passed from old age. He was 16. But, we were so happy to have been able to give him lots of love in his last days. He was a great blessing to my whole family. We

Paramount Pictures and Homeless Pets Foundation

Sanders' club members attend 'Doggone Good Time' sponsored by Paramount Pictures and the Homeless Pets Foundation to promote the movie Hotel for Dogs. The event was held at Hobby Town in Kennesaw. Crafts, activities, a special reading from the book Hotel for Dogs, lots of prizes and of course animals placed for adoption were among the events that made attending this special event a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Everyone who attended received free prescreening tickets to the movie.
